The Rapides Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition is an annual event established to stimulate and nurture interest among aspiring young artists in Louisiana.

Divisions

One winner will be chosen from each division. The Youth Division winner will be awarded a cash prize of $500.00; the Young Adult/Collegiate Division winner will be awarded a cash prize of $1,000.00. The winners will perform with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra on March 14, 2009 at the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center in Alexandria, Louisiana.

Rules

  1. Applications must be postmarked not later than midnight of Friday, January 16, 2009. A non-refundable application fee of $20.00 in a cashier's check, personal check or money order must be included with each application and must be payable to the Rapides Symphony Orchestra, Inc. Two 4” X 6” recent photos are to be included as well as a short bio.
  2. The competition is limited to residents of the State of Louisiana and/or those enrolled in school in Louisiana.
  3. Competitors will be required to perform one or more movements of a standard concerto or a single movement work, or a concert piece for which orchestral accompaniments are available. Total performance time should not exceed fifteen minutes. Memorization is recommended, but not required.
  4. The competition is limited to instrumental soloists only.
  5. Compositions must be in their original form and no transcriptions will be accepted. Each contestant will perform the solo part of his or her selection in its entirety; however, orchestral interludes may be abbreviated at the performer's discretion. Only live accompaniments are permitted. The entrant will provide the judges with an original score; no photocopies will be allowed.
  6. The decision of the judges will be final. If performances do not meet the judges' standards, no winner will be selected.
  7. Winners who perform with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra are ineligible to compete in the same division the following year.
  8. The music selected for the competition must be that intended for performance. Substitutions in repertoire to be performed with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra will not be allowed after the winners are declared.
  9. Prize money will be awarded at the performance with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra. If for some reason the declared winner is not able to perform, the alternate will perform and receive the cash award. The performance will be in the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2009 with rehearsals on Friday, March 13, 2009 and Saturday, March 14, 2009. Rehearsal times will be announced later. Additional rehearsals for soloists may be called.
  10. Entrants will be notified of the audition time schedule prior to February 5th, 2009.
  11. Names of the winners and alternates will be announced following the completion of each division.
  12. Each entrant will make provisions for his/her own accompanist. Competitors can contact the symphony office if they would like the name of a competent local accompanist whom they could engage.
  13. The Rapides Symphony Orchestra audition committee reserves the right to review and approve or disqualify applicants on the basis of their qualifications.

Competition Date

Competition auditions will be conducted at the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 7, 2009.

Performance of Winners

Winners will perform with the Rapides Symphony in the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2009.
